Melbourne's Best Kid Friendly Cafes

Welcome to our guide on the top kid-friendly cafes in Melbourne, the beginning of a short series for the top Bobux-wearing cities…next up: Auckland.

Kid friendly is quite a broad, all-encompassing topic. It might be a café that offers freebies for your kids to enjoy; or a café with its own playground or fun activities to keep the little ones occupied; or even a café that simply borders a park, especially if it has outside seating available for you to watch your energetic little dictators like a hawk.

1. The Farm Cafe - Abbotsford

What better idea than to add a cafe to an already popular family-friendly venue? The Farm Cafe is in the Collingwood Children's Farm, an open space that encourages plenty of exploration and adventures for the kids.

The kids can chase chooks, as you sup on rustic food - and afterwards you can check out the farm's lambs, goats, cows, guinea pigs and much more!

2. Happy River Café - Footscray

Across to Footscray is the Happy River Café. Situated on a hill and looking out over the Maribynong River, this café is perfect for those rugrats in tow.

Part of the Footscray Community Arts Centre, this always-vibey café has a great collection of toys and kids’ books, a lawn area for them to play on and a kids menu sure to put a smile on their face. It’s so much fun, you’ll want to order off it yourself. We hate to admit it but we tried.

Luckily, the adult fare is bloody tasty too (if a tad less fun).

3. Merri Table (formerly Ceres Café) - Brunswick East

Located in hipster overrun Brunswick East, Merri Table (formerly Ceres Café) prides itself on being environmental and a not-for-profit. It’s set against the lush backdrop of gardens and trees, which offers nice little walks while you’re waiting for your food or as a post-meal calorie-burn-off stroll.

Although the café has meat dishes, much of the food is vegetarian or vegan, making it the ideal choice for alternate diets and for ethical parents. It has a kids menu and caters to the very young crowd with an indoor and outdoor space.

You’ll love the food and the surroundings, especially in the knowledge that the fare is organic, environmentally conscious and that the profit goes back to the community. Like Oliver Twist, you won’t be able to resist coming back for more.

4. Birdie Num Nums - Carlton North

Time and again, Birdie Num Nums pops up in family circles as THE kid-friendly place to go in Melbourne's inner north.

The cafe itself looks pretty unassuming, converted from an old butcher shop, but walk through to the back and you'll find a sand pit, toys and activities to keep the kids happy!

It helps that owner Christopher Vivian, a family man himself, created the space deliberately to cater to young families. Oh, and the food is divine.

These were our picks for kid-friendly cafés in the Melbourne area. We’re sure we’ve missed some kid-friendly gems so please let us know your favs!

And of course, take the time to check out our award-winning, innovative range of shoes here. They might be just what you’re looking for, a pair that will nurture your child’s growth and look great too!
